Apologies for NOT putting this note here much sooner, READ IT!The Webmaster has found that the MS Excel spreadsheets
into which the results of many months of entering the Census Data, have
been corrupted. As each Parish or District was added to the greater
files, the data was SORTED by Surname, Forename, etc. to make searching
by researches much easier.

Parish & District maps of Angus and Dundee Version 1 Version 2
These files of index data are only available on personal request and are in a format designed to assist your personal research. The list of enumeration districts covered is shown. The files are very large Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and provide an index, not a replication of the layout or original content of the 1841 documents. The data headings are similar to the table shown below. Much transcription from the original documents on microfilm is credited to Jim Bundy and others. There is no guarantee that the data is complete or accurate - it's your task to check that.Researchers who have (or will) examined the original census documents (on microfilm) will be aware that much of the spelling of the original documents is phonetic, or at least, not as it might be expected today. It would appear that many enumerators were carrying out a task which they were not properly qualified to do. Many of the persons supplying the information to the enumerator had no way of confirming that what was written down was correct. One can imagine that the occasion of this census might have been the first time that many folks might have seen their names written, and can likely explain the differences in spelling of phonetically similar surnames nowadays. It is important that you accept that much data of the data in these files has been 'standardised' or 'amended' in an attempt to make your searches easier and help counter-balance the record-keeping by the enumerators. For example, would you find these names if not 'amended'? - RENY - RENNIE; ORCHERT - URQUHART; FLIEMAN - FLEMING; GALITALY - GELLATLY; BALINCANQUHAL - BALLINGALL; etc.The data in these files must only be used as an aid to your research, in an attempt to assist identification. Once this has been achieved, the researcher must then examine the original census return/s (on microfilm). The data in the files is NOT TO BE USED OR QUOTED AS SOURCE. The files are ONLY available to 'bona fide' PRIVATE researchers and the proposed use of the data must be stated in any request - any use for commercial use may constitute an offence. You must confirm that you are aware of these notes. It would be appreciated if you can notify the webmaster if you can provide more information where the original enumerator has used abbreviations or of mis-spellings, but please allow for the 'standardisation' process described above. If your ancestors' personal or placenames have been wrongly 'standardised' please notify the webmaster so that the master file may be amended to the benefit of other researchers. There over 86,000 records - more will be added as time permits. The Angus file contains two worksheets. The records for Dundee (currently almost 10,000) are in a separate file. Please put "1841 Census Index Files" as the subject line in your email request. My copy of Microsoft Excel has a limit of 65,536 rows per sheet and this limits each list. (Proposed MS OFFICE 10 version is likely to exceed this greatly.) |
