Text Versions of the Statistical Accounts
of a few Scottish Parishes in Angus (formerly Forfarshire)
and one for Peeblesshire.
From the years 1791-99(1), 1834-45(2) and 1950-68(3), as indicated.

Graphical representations of the pages of the Statistical Accounts for Scotland (c.1799 and c.1845) are
available on-line at http://edina.ed.ac.uk/statacc.

{Edited extract from the cover of the THIRD Statistical account}

Between 1791 and 1798 Sir John Sinclair, Baronet, a north of Scotland landowner and Member of Parliament, arranged for the preparation and publication of an account of every parish in Scotland drawn up by its minister.  As they became available they were published in 21 volumes under the title of THE STATISTICAL ACCOUNT OF SCOTLAND.  " Statistical," Sir John explained, connoted " an inquiry into the state of the country for the purpose of ascertaining the quantum of happiness enjoyed by its inhabitants and the means of its future improvement."

The ACCOUNTS are now usually referred to as "The First" or The Old " to distinguish it from " The Second " or " The New " ACCOUNT, edited on similar lines and published between 1834 and 1845.

In 1944, almost exactly one hundred years after the completion of the NEW STATISTICAL ACCOUNT, it was suggested that the time was opportune for an account of Scotland in the twentieth century.  This was started in 1950 and completed around 1968.  (It is hoped to include these THIRD texts here, too, in the future.)
